April 10, 1984: Ramirez’s first known murder of Mei Leung, a nine-year-old girl in San Francisco, went unsolved until 2009 when his DNA was matched to the crime scene.

June 28, 1984: Jennie Vincow was found murdered in her Los Angeles apartment, with Ramirez’s fingerprint marking the beginning of his known killing spree.

March 17, 1985: Maria Hernandez and her roommate Dayle Yoshie Okazaki were attacked in Rosemead, California. Okazaki was killed and Hernandez was seriously injured.

March 27, 1985: Vincent and Maxine Zazzara were murdered in their home, with Maxine’s body mutilated in a particularly gruesome fashion.

May 14, 1985: Bill Doi was killed and his wife Lillian was sexually assaulted after Ramirez broke into their Monterey Park home.

July 2, 1985: Ramirez killed Mary Louise Cannon in Arcadia by bludgeoning her with a lamp and stabbing her with a knife from her kitchen.

July 7, 1985: Joyce Lucille Nelson was stomped to death in Monterey Park, with a shoe print left on her face.

July 20, 1985: Ramirez attacked Lela and Maxon Kneiding with a machete and a handgun in Glendale, and committed another attack in Sun Valley the same night.

August 6, 1985: Virginia Peterson was shot in Northridge and her husband Chris was also shot. Both survived.

August 8, 1985: Sakina Abowath’s husband Elyas was killed in Diamond Bar, and Sakina was brutally raped.

August 18, 1985: Peter Pan was killed and Barbara Pan was sexually assaulted and beaten in San Francisco, with Ramirez leaving his signature pentagram at the scene.

August 24, 1985: Ramirez’s final known attack took place in Mission Viejo. He assaulted Bill Carns but Inez Erickson survived. She provided a description that helped identify Ramirez.

The Capture

Richard Ramirez’s capture was almost cinematic. On August 30, 1985, he was recognized by a group of citizens in East Los Angeles. After chasing him down, they subdued him until the police arrived. His capture brought relief to the terror-stricken residents of California.

The Trial and Sentencing

Ramirez’s trial began on July 22, 1988. He famously declared “Hail Satan!” during his first court appearance. On September 20, 1989, he was convicted of 13 counts of murder, 5 counts of attempted murder, 11 counts of sexual assault, and 14 counts of burglary. He was sentenced to death but remained on death row until his death from complications of B-cell lymphoma on June 7, 2013.
